The JTA Mission: Democratizing Justice Through Technology
Our mission is to democratize the legal experience through technology for the public good. The magnitude of the access to justice crisis is vast, and the justice tech sector is rapidly emerging to meet these challenges.
We enable tech innovation for the creation and scaling of affordable, accessible solutions to those impacted by the justice system.
The Scale of the Access to Justice Crisis
Justice problems create adverse impact on billions of people who face significant obstacles to meeting their justice needs. Most do not turn to lawyers.
- Over 5 billion people cannot access their rights.
- 92% of people with civil legal problems did not receive any or enough legal assistance in 2022, up from 86% in 2017.
- In at least 75% of civil cases, at least one party is self-represented, meaning they fend for themselves in a process that is stacked against them.
- The US is ranked #115 of 142 countries on affordability of access to legal support.
Leveraging technology is the most efficient way to close gaps in justice, but biases and barriers block access, stifle innovation, and prevent scalable impact.
What is legal inclusion?
Our vision is modeled on the concept of financial inclusion, as defined by the World Bank. Legal inclusion is intended to help individuals gain access to useful and affordable products and services that meet their legal needs – all delivered in a responsible and sustainable way. Legal inclusion is the vehicle to deliver access to justice. It is an enabler for UN Sustainable Development Goals  10: Reduced Inequalities and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
JTA supports technology solutions that seek to advance legal inclusion – technology that reduces disproportionate impact and inequitable access to justice.
